The difference between a great Disneyland day and a miserable one often comes down to when you go. A Tuesday in February and a Saturday in July are two completely different experiences — same park, wildly different crowds, weather, and pricing.

Here’s the real month-by-month breakdown.

What are the best months to visit Disneyland?

The sweet spots: mid-January through mid-March, mid-September through mid-November (excluding holiday weekends).

The worst times: spring break weeks, summer (June-August), Thanksgiving week, Christmas through New Year’s.

Now let’s break it down.

January

Crowds: Low (after the first week) Weather: Cool, occasional rain (55-65°F) Verdict: One of the best months to visit

The first week of January is still holiday-crowded. After that, the park empties out dramatically. Wait times plummet, and you can walk on rides that normally have 60-minute waits. The downside: shorter park hours and some attractions may be closed for refurbishment.

February

Crowds: Low Weather: Mild (55-68°F) Verdict: Excellent choice

February is consistently one of the least crowded months. Presidents’ Day weekend is the exception — avoid that if possible. Otherwise, this is a fantastic time for short waits, comfortable weather, and lower hotel prices.

March

Crowds: Low to moderate (spikes during spring break) Weather: Pleasant (60-72°F) Verdict: Great early in the month, avoid spring break weeks

Early March is still low-crowd season. Once spring break starts (which varies by school district), it gets busy fast. If you can go in the first two weeks, do it. After that, expect higher crowds through mid-April.

April

Crowds: Moderate to high Weather: Warm (65-75°F) Verdict: Hit or miss depending on spring break timing

Late April can be decent once spring break crowds clear. The weather is ideal — warm but not hot. Check school calendars for your region before booking.

May

Crowds: Moderate Weather: Warm (68-78°F) Verdict: Underrated

May before Memorial Day weekend is a solid choice. Kids are still in school, the weather is great, and summer pricing hasn’t kicked in yet. Memorial Day weekend itself is packed.

June

Crowds: High Weather: Hot (75-85°F) Verdict: Busy but manageable early in the month

Summer crowds start in mid-June when most schools let out. Early June can still be reasonable. After that, expect long wait times across the board.

July

Crowds: Very high Weather: Hot (80-90°F) Verdict: The most crowded month

July is peak Disneyland — families on summer vacation, holiday crowds around July 4th, and hot weather that drains your energy. If you must go in July, plan aggressively. Our rope drop strategy and Lightning Lane tips become essential.

August

Crowds: High (decreasing late in the month) Weather: Hot (80-88°F) Verdict: Better than July, still crowded

Late August improves as some schools go back in session. The heat is still significant. Stay hydrated and take midday breaks.

September

Crowds: Low to moderate Weather: Warm (75-85°F) Verdict: One of the best months

After Labor Day, crowds drop significantly. The weather is still warm but manageable. Halloween Time decorations start in early September, adding a fun seasonal layer. This is a great choice for shorter waits with festive atmosphere.

October

Crowds: Moderate Weather: Pleasant (68-80°F) Verdict: Excellent

Oogie Boogie Bash is a highlight for Halloween fans (separate ticket required). Regular park days have moderate crowds and great weather. Weekdays in October are fantastic.

November

Crowds: Low to moderate (except Thanksgiving week) Weather: Mild (60-72°F) Verdict: Great if you avoid Thanksgiving

Early to mid-November is low crowd with holiday decorations starting to appear. Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest of the year. The week after Thanksgiving is surprisingly quiet.

December

Crowds: Moderate to very high Weather: Cool (55-65°F) Verdict: Beautiful but crowded

The holiday decorations, seasonal food, and overall atmosphere in December are incredible. But the crowds match. The first two weeks are more manageable than the Christmas-to-New-Year’s stretch, which is among the busiest of the entire year.

What day of the week is best?

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are consistently the least crowded days. Saturday is almost always the most crowded. Sunday can be decent later in the day as locals leave.

If you can visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday outside of peak season, you’ve found the best possible combination.

Does it matter what time of day you arrive?

Yes. The first 90 minutes after park opening have the shortest lines. The last hour before closing is also noticeably quieter. The 11am-3pm window is peak crowd time regardless of the day.

How do you track the best dates for your trip?

Start by checking the Disneyland reservation calendar for availability — limited availability dates tend to be busier. Cross-reference with school calendars for your area and major holidays.
